SculpSure vs Ultrasonic Cavitation: Comparing the Two Treatments

What is it?

SculpSure

A body contouring procedure that uses non-invasive lasers to melt fat cells under the skin.

Its proper medical term is non-invasive laser lipolysis. Non-invasive means it can be done without having to make surgical incisions in your skin.

Ultrasonic cavitation

A body contouring procedure that uses low-frequency ultrasound waves (waves that, at more than 20,000Hz, are beyond the range of human hearing) to melt fat cells beneath the skin.

Its proper medical term is non-invasive lipolysis. Non-invasive means it can be done without having to make surgical incisions in your skin.

How does it work?

SculpSure

Ultrasonic cavitation

It uses light energy from diode lasers to destroy fat cells. An applicator device (which looks like this) is secured to your body—the lasers beam from the applicator, onto your skin. They heat up the fat cells and melt them to the point that they die. You’re fitted with a special belt and a gel is applied to your skin. A special device called a transducer is run over your body which produces controlled, gentle bursts of ultrasound energy. These heat the deeper layers of the skin, causing the fat cells to die and the skin to contract and eventually tighten.

What areas of the body does it treat?

SculpSure

Ultrasonic cavitation

It’s intended mainly to remove areas of body fat—such as saddlebags (fat deposits on the upper outer thighs), love handles (belly fat around the torso) and double chins—that prove difficult to lose through diet or exercise. It’s effective on areas of fat that prove difficult to lose through diet or exercise, such as the buttocks, abdomen, love handles, upper arms, inner thighs and chin.

Is it safe?

SculpSure

Ultrasonic cavitation

SculpSure is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), has fewer side effects than other fat reduction treatments, and uses technology that’s been employed throughout the medical industry for over 50 years.

Though there are several different types and brands of ultrasonic cavitation, UltraShape is the only procedure cleared by the FDA.

Does it hurt?

SculpSure

Ultrasonic cavitation

No. During the procedure, you’ll feel only alternating warm and cool sensations as the lasers begin to destroy your fat cells. There may be a slight tingling. There’s very little pain once you’ve had the treatment. No, you shouldn’t feel any pain. You’ll be lying down as the treatment is given so you should be able to relax. The sensation of the procedure is often compared to how your body feels after an intense workout at the gym.

How long does the procedure take?

SculpSure

Ultrasonic cavitation

SculpSure takes 25 minutes to treat one area, and several areas can be treated at once because of how the machine is set up. This can vary, but ultrasonic cavitation usually takes between 30 minutes and one hour.

How many treatments do I need?

SculpSure

Ultrasonic cavitation

Because a number of areas can be treated at the same time, most patients see results after one procedure, and particularly in the six weeks after treatment. However, some patients choose to have further treatment six to eight weeks after the first to target more fat cells.

The best results tend to be seen at around 12 weeks.

SculpSure is cleared by the FDA for fat thickness reduction due to its effectiveness at destroying fat cells permanently.

Many practitioners claim you’ll be able to see results after a single session, while cautioning that the best results are most visible after eight to 12 treatments. Others say four to eight.

The exact number will depend on factors such as your age, metabolism, weight and the structure of the tissue in the area you’re having treated.

Ultrasonic cavitation is cleared by the FDA for circumferential reduction, as its effects are only temporary (it merely empties the cells of triglycerides, which are a type of fat).

Will I need to be given anaesthetic?

SculpSure

Ultrasonic cavitation

No. The treatment doesn’t involve any surgery and causes no pain. No. The treatment doesn’t involve any surgery and causes no pain.

How long will I be off work or unable to do my usual activities?

Are there any side effects?

SculpSure

Ultrasonic cavitation

There are no long-term side effects. You shouldn’t suffer any bruising but your body might feel swollen and tender for a short time afterward. Although there are no long-term side effects, some patients have experienced:

  • pink or red patches on their skin
  • irritated or tender skin
  • mild aches and pains
  • higher body temperature
  • headaches

Who is the treatment intended for?

SculpSure

Ultrasonic cavitation

As laser lipolysis is designed to contour and shape the body rather than aid weight loss, it’s aimed more at people who are at, or near, their healthy body weight and who want to remove areas of fat they’ve been unable to shed through diet or exercise. It’s also for people who want a slimmer body without undergoing surgery such as liposuction. I’m pregnant. Can I have the treatment?

SculpSure

Ultrasonic cavitation

As the laser only targets upper layers of fat, it doesn’t penetrate the reproductive system and won’t affect pregnancy in any way. The procedure is not advised for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

I have diabetes. Is it safe for me to have the treatment?

SculpSure

Ultrasonic cavitation

SculpSure is safe for some people with diabetes and it can help them lose fat, though only if they’re a suitable candidate for the procedure (i.e. they’re otherwise healthy, with a body mass index of 30 or under). Although some research suggests that ultrasound used to safely remove fatty tissue around the abdomen can help people with diabetes, it’s still to be fully investigated and approved as a suitable treatment.

Who else is it not recommended for?

SculpSure

Ultrasonic cavitation

Doctors don’t tend to recommend SculpSure for people who have heart disease, problems with blood flow, or a weak immune system. You must also be over the age of 18. The procedure isn’t recommended if you have:

  • heart disease or any kind of serious illness
  • epilepsy
  • problems with blood flow
  • a pacemaker
  • metal prosthetics

You must also be over the age of 18.

Can the procedure get rid of my cellulite?

SculpSure

Ultrasonic cavitation

Although laser lipolysis helps tighten the skin, it isn’t able to remove cellulite. Cynosure’s Cellulaze and PelleFirm treatments are designed specifically for that purpose. The treatment produces new collagen and elastic fibres in your skin, which helps reduce cellulite.

What happens to the melted fat cells?

SculpSure

Ultrasonic cavitation

The melted fat cells are left inside your body to be flushed out by your lymphatic system (tissues and organs that work together to get rid of waste products inside your body). There will be no increase to the levels of cholesterol or fat in your blood.
